Just call me Pollyanna

April 17, 2007 · 2 Comments

For those of you that don’t know, Pollyanna is a movie that came out in 1960 about a girl who always tries to see the good in things…until she falls off a tree and becomes paralyzed. Then she can’t find anything good about anything, but that’s a whole different topic. I have decided to “see the good” in the apartment. Here goes:

1. Our mailbox can only be opened with a key. So while all the rest of you suburban people in nice houses get your mail stolen unbeknown to you, I am protected!

2. I have re-discovered the pencil and paper method. In fact, a rough draft of this very entry was scribbled onto paper first.

3. Near the back door of my apartment building is this light, but it is broken. This means that every minute or so it goes off before slowly working itself back to shining bright. I call it the “faux security light” because it appears to be motion sensored. It’s pretty much awesome.

4. We’re on the second floor. The 1st floor is more likely to face break-ins. The 3rd floor means more stairs to go up and down. We however, are on the best floor of them all.

5. The guy who moved in a week or so ago directly under us has a sweet taste in music and I get to listen to it as I go to sleep each night. I have yet to determine if he or she is playing music loudly on speakers or actually playing the guitar.

6. When you don’t get there in time to find a parking place all that is left is the street. Therefore, one of these days I will finally perfect the art of parallel parking. Until then, my car will be about a foot from the curb after driving up.

7. We have maintenance people! If anything is broken or goes wrong they are there within ten minutes (unless it is at night). No more waiting around for someone to change the light bulb. (Alright, so maybe it isn’t that hands-on, but still.)

8. We have a pool…? I have yet to see it, but supposedly it is true. Someday, I am going to scout it out.

The Generation of Sheer Brilliance

April 14, 2007 · 1 Comment

Here’s my theory - our generation, “the apathetic generation” is actually brilliant without even knowing it. We’ve lived so much of our lives doing nothing and then being catered to. Look at us right now, so many people just want the 18 to 26-year-olds to vote so badly that they are sometimes speaking directly to and for us. Why quit now? I think our generation should just continue this act of apathy so that nominees need to really try to get our vote and not just assume we’ll vote for them because of party recognition. Politics could take on a whole new face in this country. It’s brilliant!

Eh, just a thought.

Nothing left

April 3, 2007 · 1 Comment

The cool pillow against the heat of your face.
The pleasant darkness with a dim light floating in from under the door.
The wet hair soaking into the pillowcase and sheets as you gently brush it straight.
The rustle of your sister stirring in her sleep.
The sound of The Fray singing songs that must have been written for you.
The heaviness of your eyelids as they resist the desire to sleep.
The knowledge of having to wake up in only six hours.
The notions, ideas, and previous statements that are thought about until you know longer know what to think.
And finally, the realization that sadly the tears just will not come.
