All in the Name

October 3, 2007 · 1 Comment

What if you want to name your kid something sweet, and then name her, but two weeks later discover she’s more of a Gertrude than a Darlene? Can you do that? Go back and legally rename her?

My sister renamed our cat a few weeks after we got him. His name was Riley at first, but then she named him Houdini, and then Deni for short (her spelling choice, not mine). Today, I realized my computer really wasn’t a Pollyanna, so I renamed it Tabitha. This was done simply by clicking a button. But how many people wish they could rename their kid?

I suppose I will give my kids three middle names or something so if I change my mind I’ll just call them by one of their other names.

Rent-A-Kitten

October 2, 2007 · 2 Comments

Brilliant. As a fund raiser for something (not even sure what, but one of the frats was sponsoring it) there were kittens. Dozens flocked to the table in front of which was a large cardboard box full of kittens. For five dollars you could rent one for a half hour to play with.

For me, that is way too much money, but for every animal loving pet-deprived student on campus, $5 was nothing. It is amazing how many people were smiling within a 50 foot radius of that table. It’s remarkable how such a seemingly small thing can cause great happiness.

I just wish I’d thought of it first.
